Methodology

StopBDSinToronto.ca separates two kinds of statements. Factual statements describe what happened, who said it, and when; each one cites a source on the same page. Position statements express the conclusions of the Toronto Coalition Against Racist Boycotts and are written as such.

Source hierarchy

The coalition ranks sources in this order and cites the highest-ranked source available for each fact.

1. Primary records. Parliamentary votes and Hansard, provincial legislation and orders in council, court decisions, official university statements and external reviews, statistical agencies (Statistics Canada, Toronto Police Service), and the BDS movement’s own published documents when the fact concerns what the movement says.
2. Scholarship and book-length reports. Peer-reviewed research and published books.
3. Advocacy organizations’ reports. Cited for their data and identified as advocacy sources.
4. Press. Used for dates, quotations, and events not yet in a primary record, with the outlet named.

Citation rules

• Each source has a stable identifier, a live link, and an archived copy made at the time of citation.
• Numbers carry the date they were valid and the body that reported them. Where two credible sources report different figures, both figures appear with their sources.
• Quotations are short, verbatim, and attributed. Paraphrase is used otherwise.
• Claims about what the BDS movement wants or says are supported by the movement’s own documents and its leaders’ public statements.

What the site does not do

• It does not publish personal information about private individuals. Organizations are named; private persons are not.
• It does not estimate figures that no record supports. Where a number has not been published, the page says so.
• It does not carry text addressed to search engines or AI systems, hidden text, or content that differs by visitor.

Review and updates

Every page shows the date it was published and the date it was last changed. Pages are reviewed at least quarterly; a review that changes nothing is still recorded in the page history. Errors are corrected in place and listed on the corrections page.
